Nicholas Sullivan, FSC, is a biospeleologist who has studied cave biota in 1,600 caves in over 100 countries. He is a member of the Christian Brothers teaching institute (Fratres Scholarum Christianarum). Brother Nicholas received his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. He has been a professor at Manhattan College and is a joint venturer in the Cave Research Foundation. His efforts since 1981 have concentrated on the caves of Chillagoe, a rather remote area of northern Queensland, where he has led twenty expeditions. To date, over 25 new taxa of animals restricted to the cave environment (troglobites) have been described from Chillagoe. He has also participated in Explorers Club expeditions to the Alta Verapaz of Guatemala and the Rio Camuy System of western Puerto Rico. Dr. Sullivan is a past president of the National Speleological Society and of the Explorers Club. He has written many articles, and his most recent book, published in 1997, is Speleology--Caves and the Cave Environment, coauthored with George W. Moore.
